Anti Fatigue Mat

Question from Lisa
Could you tell me if the company called “WellnessMats”(beautiful decorative mats) if their anti-fatigue kitchen mats are non-toxic? They say its free of latex and BPA’s, but I noticed it’s flame retardant?? Doesn’t that make it toxic? Help…very confused when they say “NON-TOXIC and still is flame retardant. Thank you for your research and help with this. So many of my friends and family have hardwood floors and need a healthy kitchen mat! UGH
Lisa’s Answer
I agree, it is confusing. Part of the problem is the lack of regulation of the term non-toxic. There are many types of flame retardants and some are more toxic than others. Even California Proposition 65 which is more strict than federal guidelines, only have 5 flame retardants on their list of regulated toxic chemicals. I’d first check to see if the mats have a Prop 65 warning label. If they don’t, at least you know that they do not have levels of the most toxic chemicals that exceed the guidelines. The website does not have any information beyond stating that it is polyurethane technology. That doesn’t tell you anything about added chemicals. Also, know that over time the polyurethane will break down and the flame retardants can end up in household dust.
It’s also possible that the polyurethane can have other chemical additives that are not disclosed. I would opt for a cotton or wool mat instead!
