Glass Food Steamers

A question came to me this week regarding a glass steamer I had suggested back in 2013. At the time it was the only glass steamer I could find and it was only available in Canada. More recently, I could only find one glass option that didn’t have an other materials of concern.

Is it Toxic to Eat Off Depression Glass

My general rule is when in doubt, err on the side of caution.

It may be true that there is so little uranium or arsenic in the glass that it’s not a problem. But the other side of the coin is not a problem for who? Age and body size can make a difference in how toxic it is to an individual person as well as the condition of their detox system and the health of their body as a whole.

Lead in Glass Canning Jars

I use glass canning jars with glass lids for almost all of my food storage---I don't actually can with them but I store lots of different foods in the fridge, pantry and freezer with them. I came across a blogger who used an XRF gun to test these jars and found they had 142 ppm of lead. I called the company and when I asked if the jars were lead-free, they said that no glass is lead-free. They said their jars were tested annually, and that they were made in Germany where they said the standards are stricter, and they said that it would be impossible for lead to migrate into the food.

Breville Glass Kettle and California Proposition 65

I had been looking for an electric glass kettle and finally found the Breville the Crystal Clear 1800W Schott Glass Kettle. When I opened the box it had the following warning: "California Proposition 65 Applicable to California Residents Only This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm." I called Breville to find out what chemicals in this glass kettle could possibly cause cancer, etc. The answer I received is that they put this notice on all their packaging for all their products to meet California standards, whether or not the product contains any of the hazardous chemicals.

PTFC Coating on Cookware?

Does anyone have any information on PTFC coatings on cookware? Recently I was at Williams Sonoma and saw their new "Gold Touch" line of cookware, which is advertised as having a non-stick ceramic coating. When I saw this I contacted the company to find out if it was a nano-ceramic coating, because I'm concerned about nano-particles and want to limit my exposure to these. They wrote back and said it was not a nano-ceramic coating but a PTFC coating.

1950’s Fire King Milk Glass Dishware - Is it Lead Free?

I've always liked milkglass, and saw some on Etsy from the 1950's (I think, given the stamp and what google says about the date stamp).

From all what I can learn through google, there was arscenic in milk glass back in the 1800's, and then they stopped that and used lead for awhile instead to acheive the same milky look, up to the early 1900's.

Is Mikasa Crystal Always Leaded?

Hi, I am trying to find out if all of the Mikasa "crystal" pieces are actually leaded or are they just glass? I am trying to eliminate us using these dishes if they contain an amount of lead. We will put them in our china cabinet to enjoy them.

Natural Aluminum Bakeware

I own Nordic natural aluminum bakeware. Is it safe? I just replaced all my teflon coated bakeware and am now wondering if the aluminum is safe. If not, what is safe to use as bakeware? I've tried glass from anchor hocking and don't like the way it cooks things like brownies. Also, what is a cookie sheet alternative.

Is Acrylic Drinkware Safe to Drink From?

I just bought some acrylic plastic drinkware from Crate and Barrel. I am normally against plastic being used in my home, but I needed cheap, durable drinkware for outdoor use and everyday use. I realize these do not biodegrade easily, but I will use these until they fall apart (hopefully I will have many years of use out of these).

Cast Iron Skillets Made in China

I recently bought a set of 3 cast iron skillets that had a "Made in China" sticker on them. After washing and using them a few times, the black finish started coming off on the towel I dried them with. The inside of the pans started to look brown where the finish had come off. Does this sound normal for cast iron? I have an old cast iron skillet that I picked up in a thrift store that is not doing this. Do you think it is safe to use the newer skillets?

Food-Grade EVA Wrap in Mats

Just wondering if you have any opinions about "food grade EVA" found in the wrap-in-mats. I bought one for my son for his lunch bag and am now wondering about the inner lining of EVA touching his food. I'm considering purchasing another (for snacks) but am a bit put off by the lining. I'd love to know what you think about it and if you think it is "safe" to use.
